On May 6, 2018 Chris De Lauwer, curator and keeper of the Asia collection in the MAS, passed away. Chris was 62.

CLOSED - With “Body Art” the MAS has developed a varied exhibition about forms of body adornment, from make-up and tattoos to scarification and surgical changes, throughout the centuries and in different cultures. The main question in this exhibition was “Why do people alter their body?”

Breaking Boundaries

Antwerp Olympic city
A hundred years ago, Antwerp organised the Olympic Games. In spite of the difficult post-war situation and limited financial resources, the Games were groundbreaking. This mini exhibition includes posters, photos, trophies and medals from the sports event and its participants.

Mystical Marriage of Christ

2 stained-glass windows

The MAS collection contains a number of beautiful stained-glass windows from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. Two of the rare intact examples are listed as Flemish masterpieces: rather large stained-glass windows from around 1600 depicting the Mystical Marriage of Christ.

 

Congo in the MAS

The origin of the Congolese collection in the MAS dates back about a hundred years.

Saluting Admiral Couple

At the request of the city of Antwerp, the Antwerp artist Guillaume Bijl created the artwork Saluting Admiral Couple for the fifth anniversary of the MAS. The work gives the monumental building a playful and surprising touch.
