The MAS exhibit, 'Cool Japan', took you on a whirlwind tour of the global fascination for Japanese visual culture with icons such as Hello Kitty, Zelda and Sailor Moon.
The MAS is turning five, and we plan to live it up over Whitsun weekend with a surprising and multi-faceted programme. From 14 to 16 May 2016, the MAS celebrates its fifth anniversary with two new exhibitions, DJs in the square, edible art, workshops for young and old, good food and drink at our food truck festival, and an eccentric firework display to round the whole thing off!
This necklace, a guild chain, comes from a German or northern Dutch marksmen's guild with St George as its patron saint. It belongs to the so-called guild silver, with objects from the guilds' environment.
On June 12, 1945, American Brigadier General Clare H. Armstrong donated two V-bombs to Antwerp as a reminder of the bitter struggle: an intact V1 practice bomb and a slightly damaged manned flying bomb. This bomb, the ReIV, we loaned to the Musée La Coupole near Saint-Omer in northern France.
Le Corbusier (1887-1965) was an architect who believed that the way a city is built can improve the lives of its residents. He drew up plans for Antwerp-Linkeroever that were never completed and he built an entirely new city in India called Chandigarh. This exhibition immerses you the ideas of Le Corbusier, but also lets you saunter through the streets of Chandigarh and take a look behind Linkeroever’s façades.
The exhibition reveals the intimate relationship between the city and food, from the sixteenth century to the distant future. Follow the trail of food in the city and find out how what we eat has left its mark on the map of Antwerp.
In the MAS pavilion, you can see where V-bombs fell on Antwerp and the scars they have left behind, by means of photographs, first-person testimonies and maps. You can even see a real V1-bomb from the MAS collection.
