Happy Birthday Dear Academy

The Royal Academy for Fine Arts existed 350 years in 2013. At the same time, the renowned Fashion Department turned 50. That is why the whole of Antwerp was dominated by the Academy and the clash between contemporary artistic "violence" and historical heritage.

V-bombs in Antwerp, 1944-1945
The MAS focuses on a piece of city history from the Second World War. In the pavilion, you can see where V-bombs fell on Antwerp and the scars they have left behind, by means of photographs, first-person testimonies and maps. You can even see a real V1-bomb from the MAS collection.

In 2020, the MAS is taking a whole new course with its youth program "MAS in Young Hands". What must be stored in the MAS? A hundred years ago, Antwerp organised the Olympic Games. In spite of the difficult post-war situation and limited financial resources, the Games were groundbreaking. This mini exhibition includes posters, photos, trophies and medals from the sports event and its participants.

Film Dance

On Saturday 6 April 2013 the artist and filmmaker Hans Op de Beeck made “Dance”, a contemporary film about migration for the Red Star Line Museum. It was a cold spring day but the commitment and the enthusiasm of the 770 extras was heart-warming.
