In memoriam

Jacob Sabakinu Kivilu 10/10/1945 - 08/01/2021

It is with fond memories and the utmost respect that the MAS says goodbye to Jacob Sabakinu Kivilu. Sabakinu was Professor of History at the University of Kinshasa (UNIKIN) and honorary member of the Belgian Royal Academy for Overseas Sciences. He was an esteemed bridge-builder between Congolese and Belgian universities and museums.

The MAS’s long-standing collaboration with Jacob Sabakinu dates back to the establishment of the museum between 2009 and 2011. He acted as co-curator of the ‘Antwerp, World Port’ exhibition, which was realised in association with the universities of Ghent (UG) and Kinshasa (UNIKIN). He was engaged in a multimedia project focusing on the close connection between the port cities of Matadi and Antwerp. As well as Congolese sailors, the resulting video features Professor Sabakinu, in his capacity as historian.

It was a privilege to have the opportunity to once again work with Sabakinu, in the framework of the ‘100 x Congo’ exhibition. He wrote a contribution to the exhibition catalogue and coordinated the collaboration with the Congolese authors.

Jacob Sabakinu will be missed, at the MAS and elsewhere, as a father, husband, author, researcher, teacher and friend.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues worldwide.
