The Salon

Curly, braided, shaved, straightened, dyed, extensions or a wig? In a super-diverse city like Antwerp, you will find hairstyles and hair traditions in all colours and shapes. The hair salons where it all happens are equally diverse. The photo exhibition 'The Salon' gave you a taste of the diversity of hair salons and cuts.

ErfgoedLab Antwerpen and Belgian photographer Ines Vansteenkiste-Muylle strolled around the city. Together, they went in search of hair traditions of the past and present and captured 14 hairdressers and their clients. This intimate photo reportage could be seen in the MAS' boulevard from autumn 2024 until the end of february 2026. On your way to the roof, you travelled past the many hair styles, faces and techniques found in the salons of our super-diverse city.

This powerful series of photos was accompanied by many stories. Through audio clips, you could listen to hairdressers and clients talk about their experiences. About how hairdressers learn and pass on the trade, how their passion started and what techniques they apply. About the expectations of clients, who often also go to the hair salon for social contact and shared memories. About how important hair is for many people and how it helps shape their identity.

In short, the photo exhibition treated you to a surprising reflection of our colourful city. And all for free on your way to the MAS panorama.

The Salon was on display from 25 October 2024 to the end of february 2026 in the promenade.
