An entire city in one museum space

Thanks to the documentary by Christian Barani, during the exhibition, you will feel as if you are strolling through the streets of Chandigarh. Eight large screens show you how the current residents live in the carefully planned city, long after the architect is gone.

Nello and Patrasche

Jan Corteel devoted himself to promoting the story of Nello and Patrasche in Antwerp and Belgium. Over the years, Jan even built up a Nello and Patrasche collection, with all kinds of merchandise and various editions of the book. He donated this collection to the MAS.

Le Corbusier. Linkeroever - Chandigarh

Le Corbusier (1887-1965) was an architect who believed that the way a city is built can improve the lives of its residents. He drew up plans for Antwerp-Linkeroever that were never completed and he built an entirely new city in India called Chandigarh. This exhibition immerses you the ideas of Le Corbusier, but also lets you saunter through the streets of Chandigarh and take a look behind Linkeroever’s façades.

The conversion of Saul

The Saulus tableau depicts a Biblical scene: on his way from Jerusalem to Damascus, the Roman Saul, persecuting Christians, is blinded by a lightning bolt and thrown from his horse. This tile tableau of over 1 by 2 metres has 98 tiles in majolica, colourful and glazed earthenware.

Many museums in Belgium and abroad are eager to borrow works from the MAS. You may come across pieces from the MAS collection at exhibitions all over the world.

The story of the site

Along the frayed fault line between the city and port lies a raw and rusty area. For many Antwerp residents, this represents a blind spot on the map. However, this area oozes history linked to the once bustling in-city port.

A PLAYLIST

This year, we are creating the city's playlist for the Altar of Antwerp. This playlist will consist of songs that city residents bring in. Each song is linked to a moment, a person or a feeling that the participant wants to evoke.

Belgian emigrants

In 1890, the painter Louis van Engelen depicted a crowd of Belgian emigrants moving across Antwerp’s Nassau Bridge to the district of Het Eilandje towards a ship. The resident population watches them pass by.
