Food, people and the city

Comparative perspectives

This conference, strongly linked to the theme of the MAS exhibition 'Antwerp à la carte', aimed to increase our awareness of food systems as dynamic cultural phenomena. The conference took place between 21-23 September 2022.

What is on display?

The MAS has a lot to offer. In addition to the permanent presentation there are also temporary exhibitions, the building, an extensive collection, etc.

Dimitri Leue & Tine Embrechts

Interview

Together with the MAS, theatre producer, writer and actor Dimitri Leue gathered stories from the collection and the city for the new exhibition 'Listen'. He wrote a compelling audio play that you can listen to in the exhibition. Tine Embrechts plays the role of Kameleonie.

Anybody home?

Looking for the sewer crocodile, listening to talking tableware, playing board games or drawing on the walls.... In the playful new family exhibition "Anybody home?" you will explore the MAS collection together with your (grand) children. You reflect on what a 'home' means. And one thing can already be revealed: it is different for everyone.

What's on display?

The MAS tells the story of centuries of contact between Antwerp and the world. You'll experience part of the tale on every floor.

Collaborations

Communities and individuals as well as museum and academic partners contribute to the MAS stories. For each project, partners complement each other's knowledge and talents.

Painting by Van Bree on the list of Top Pieces

The painting 'Entry of Bonaparte, as First Consul, into Antwerp on 18th July 1803' by Mathieu Ignatius Van Bree was added to the list of Top Pieces by the Flemish Government. The large oil painting hangs in the Palace of Versailles, an identical work in a small format belongs to the MAS collection.

Scheldt Free!

The freeing of the Scheldt was a landmark event in Flemish history. In mid-1863, Antwerp celebrated that after more than 250 years, merchant shipping on the Scheldt was truly free again. A telling painting of this ‘Scheldt Free!’ celebration from the MAS collection can be seen in our Visible Storage.

Pavilions

In the shadow of the MAS, you'll find several publicly accessible pavilions that you can visit. There you will discover more stories about Antwerp today.

New in 2020

Like previous years, in 2020 the MAS has a lot to offer with impressive Congolese art, a V-bomb in the pavilion, boats in the boulevard and a new interpretation of the viewing depot.
