Breaking Boundaries

Antwerp Olympic city
A hundred years ago, Antwerp organised the Olympic Games. In spite of the difficult post-war situation and limited financial resources, the Games were groundbreaking. This mini exhibition includes posters, photos, trophies and medals from the sports event and its participants.

Film Dance

On Saturday 6 April 2013 the artist and filmmaker Hans Op de Beeck made “Dance”, a contemporary film about migration for the Red Star Line Museum. It was a cold spring day but the commitment and the enthusiasm of the 770 extras was heart-warming.

‘Cask hood’ of an alembic

This ‘helmet’ is indispensable in illustrating the history of distillation in the Low Countries. In various 16th and 17th-century engravings and paintings, you can see how vapours were cooled down and converted into liquids in a helmet like this. In Belgium, we do not know a second one like this.

A bird’s eye view of Antwerp

Every district of Antwerp consists of a wonderful mix of historical buildings and modern architecture. To see all of this beauty you actually would need wings. But fortunately there are several places, both high up in the air and on the ground, to see as much as possible of the city.

Tranzyt Antwerpia

The photographer Herman Selleslags and the author Pascal Verbeken took an unforgettable journey through Europe. They packed the diary of the Jewish teenager Benjamin Kopp, who was born in a village near Warsaw and was a Red Star Line passenger in 1912, in their suitcase.

Le Corbusier. Linkeroever – Chandigarh

CLOSED - The exhibition immersed the visitor in the ideas of the world famous architect Le Corbusier (1887-1965), but did also let them saunter through the streets of Chandigarh and gave them a look behind Linkeroever’s façades.

Migrants on deck

Photographs show the people involved and the circumstances surrounding their emigration. Consequently, photography is an important source of information for the story of the Red Star Line.

Yiddish advertisement

Antwerp was a particularly popular port of emigration among Jews from Central and Eastern Europe. These people constituted a sizeable proportion of the Red Star Line’s passengers. The shipping company recruited its “customers” from deep within Eastern Europe.
