Pictures by Raoul Van Den Boom

Raoul Van Den Boom's collection

Photographer Raoul Van Den Boom (°1937) donated his collection of 45,683 photos to the MAS in 2005. They are unique images of the artistic and social life in Antwerp from the 1950s to 1980s.

Louis Armstrong at the then Antwerp Ancienne Belgique. The avant-garde galleries Ad Libitum, Wide White Space and VECU club. The artists Jef Verheyen and Panamarenko, the musicians Ferre Grignard and Wannes Van de Velde and the fashion shows of Ann Salens: Van Den Boom portrayed it all. As he did with the city and its port, which changed a lot in the second half of the 20th century.

Raoul Van Den Boom's collection is now fully digitized. The negatives and positives are safely stored in the MAS depot. A small selection of his photos is now exhibited in the free Visible Storage and can be digitally viewed.

MAS volunteers dive into the collection

Sixteen MAS volunteers delved into the museum's collection, each choosing an object that particularly touches them personally.

Collection news

An object leaves on a trip to another museum, another undergoes research. Or a special piece is recognised as a Flemish Masterpiece. Or our collection expands.

Stories by pupils

Together with parents and the MAS, arts organisation De Veerman organises an annual writing competition for primary school pupils called 'De Wondere Pluim'. Children get to write a story inspired by an object from our collection.
