Gender equality is one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations and is also an essential part of Belgium's legal goals on equal opportunities.
Despite this important position in policy plans and international agreements, the public debate on gender equality often gets bogged down in superficialities. Discussions then focus mainly on the correct use of pronouns, while deeper structural inequalities, power relations and the social impact of gender inequality receive less attention. This creates polarisation and polemic, which sometimes hinder rather than advance the pursuit of true equality.
MAS curator Selm Merel Wenselaers talks to masharu and Tristan Elísabet Birta. Together, they explore how gender equality can be more than a superficial discussion and what social, cultural and personal dimensions play a role in it. This conversation aims to go beyond clichés and disagreements and offer insights into the challenges and possibilities of achieving real, inclusive equality.
