Collection items to the Fisheries Museum

The NAVIGO Fisheries Museum in Oostduinkerke reopened its doors on 7 September 2024. The MAS gave some remarkable pieces on loan.

‘Cask hood’ of an alembic

This ‘helmet’ is indispensable in illustrating the history of distillation in the Low Countries. In various 16th and 17th-century engravings and paintings, you can see how vapours were cooled down and converted into liquids in a helmet like this. In Belgium, we do not know a second one like this.

For the first retrospective of the oeuvre of Michaelina Wautier (1604-1689), Rubenshuis and the MAS are joining forces. The exhibition - a world premiere  - demonstrates the exceptional talent of an artist who became great at a time when female artists were very rare. Her work is so multifaceted and unique that it defies all art historical imagination.

Sarvavid Vairocana

The 54 preserved miniatures in this series together form a visual guide for meditation on a mandala. This is a depiction of the cosmos, in this case with Sarvavid Vairocana – the most important of the five heavenly or dhyani Buddhas.
