Playing cricket, celebrating Christmas or Nowruz, singing Gospel, or taking part in Goose Riding. In a diverse city like Antwerp, you can find all kinds of traditions that people still actively practice today. In the free Visible Storage, eight people invite you to discover the tradition they continue to live and experience. Each of them selected an object that is indispensable to their tradition and shares what that tradition means to them.
Their chosen objects are displayed alongside eight pieces from the MAS collection. In this way, Living Collection, Living Traditions brings together sixteen objects and eight personal stories. They show how traditions are passed on, but also how they change and acquire new meanings time and again. In an audio recording, the participants themselves talk about their tradition and the object they selected.
This project was created in collaboration with the residents of Robert Molsstraat (Christmas), Kathy Pedrami (Nowruz), A Lo Cubano vzw (Salsa), Lifeline vzw (Gospel), Kras Jeugdwerk vzw (cricket), Ganzerijders Zandvliet vzw – Vermaak na Arbeid (Goose Riding), Salma El Issati (Henna Art), Tattoo Eddy Since 1980 (Tattoos), and ErfgoedLab.
