On August 12, a total solar eclipse will take place and will also be visible from Belgium. The moon will cover more than 90% of the sun. From the rooftop of the MAS, you can experience this eclipse while enjoying a 360° panorama of Antwerp. Public observatory Urania will provide several telescopes with solar filters for safe observation.
The first contact between the moon and the sun will occur at 7:18 PM. As the sun gradually sinks lower on the horizon, the percentage of coverage will steadily increase. The eclipse will reach its maximum at 8:13 PM. After that, the moon will slowly move past the sun until the last contact around 9:05 PM.
What are the effects in clear weather?
With 90% of the sun covered, an unusual and dimmer twilight-like light appears. Nature already begins to respond: temperatures drop slightly and some flowers start to close. The sky takes on a remarkable color, but it remains too bright to see the stars. The sun still shines strongly enough to illuminate the surroundings.
What are the effects in cloudy weather?
Because the eclipse reaches its maximum in the early evening, when the sun is already low in the sky, the sensation of darkness will feel even more intense.

Stay safe
Never look directly at the sun with the naked eye. Sunglasses, CDs/DVDs, or photographic filters also do NOT provide safe protection. While they may reduce bright visible light, they do not block the harmful ultraviolet and infrared radiation.
