Discover Batak Culture

A cultural journey & conversation

    Saturday 17 October 2026 from 14:00 to 17:00

Are you curious about Indonesia beyond Bali? Discover the rich culture of the Batak people of North Sumatra. Batak culture is a unique blend of ancient traditions and modern Western influences. The Batak developed their own writing system, known as Aksara Batak, which is used to write texts on tree bark manuscripts that are then folded accordion-style.

During this engaging lecture, you will explore their stories, traditions, symbols, and way of life, and learn how these continue to evolve today.

Ever wondered what your name would look like in an ancient Indonesian writing tradition? In the interactive workshop following the lecture, you will learn how to write your own name in Batak script. No prior knowledge or experience is required.
