Between us

Exploring queer spaces

Through the lens of queer stories, the exhibition ‘Between Us’ explores what it means to live together and meet one another. What it means to be allowed to truly be yourself—in your own body, in your relationships with others, in public, and behind closed doors. It is an exhibition that speaks from within the LGBTQI+ community about themes that affect us all. An exhibition that shows how these themes, even today, are not publicly accepted or accessible for everyone.

In 'Between Us', the MAS invites you to step into the stories of the LGBTQI+ community—stories that have long been part of society, but have not always been visible. Stories of people who love, search, celebrate, care, and sometimes have to fight to claim space for who they are.

Through personal testimonies, heritage pieces, photographs, and artworks, the exhibition invites you to reflect on queer lives. Not as something belonging to "others," but as something that touches us all. After all, everyone knows what it feels like to reveal or hide yourself, to belong, or to feel excluded.

Guided by themes such as intimacy & encounter, (chosen) family, body & vulnerability, and community & struggle, you will connect with LGBTQI+ lives from the 1960s to the present day. The exhibition shows how these lives have helped shape Antwerp, and how the city, in turn, offered space, imposed limits, or evolved.

This exhibition was created in close collaboration with individuals, organizations, and communities. Their stories and perspectives form the heart of the exhibition. At the same time, the MAS places these stories within a broader history of emancipation, joy, rights, and persecution.

'Between Us' is an invitation to look and to be seen. To pause, to recognize, and perhaps to understand something new—about others, and about yourself.
