Man and horse share a long history. From the Industrial Revolution onwards, the horse became more and more a companion animal and less and less a beast of burden. People have also been eating horse meat for a long time. This is less well known and also somewhat controversial. 'Horse', the photography project by Heleen Peeters, is about exactly that.

Heleen Peeters immersed herself in the horse (meat) culture worldwide. She visited horse breeders, horse inspections and riding stables. She went to look in slaughterhouses, processing plants and at butchers. A driving force is her own family history, as her family runs a horse meat business near Antwerp.

Peeters' images raise questions: What determines the status of the horse? Why do traditions change? And what if the same happened to other animals?

In the photo book 'Horse', Heleen Peeters compiles her observations.

From 16 March 2021 a selection of her photos can be seen in the exhibition 'Antwerp à la carte' on the 5th floor. Because the story of horse meat is also about food and the city.
